1. Have you ever felt set apart because of something that identifies you? Your gender, your faith, your political perspective, your skin color?
2. For the person or group that set you apart, how do you think they came to that decision of separation?
3. Were you in Springfield when this segregation took place? Did it affect you in any way? If you were not living during the time of segregation, do you think you would stand up against the laws of segregation? Why or why not?
God of the separated, you know what it is like to be present on the other side, on the outside. You understand those who live and see life differently. Whenever there is a line that is drawn, a boundary set, you are on the other side of where we are standing. May it bother us to see you on the other side, when we long to be in your presence, with you walking with us. Help us to erase the lines that we have drawn so that your creative love can grow unbound. Amen.
Ponder on the Journey
If you saw injustice happening right before your eyes today, what would you do? Be silent? Run? Comply? Say something? Say nothing?
NEXT STOP
Your next stop will be the Springfield Police Department
Jesus and his friends went outside of the city to be with his friends, separating themselves from the people of the city. Silver Springs Park was a place for separation as well, but not by choice. Built in 1918, Silver Springs Park is one of Springfield’s 10 Historic Parks and during the era of segregation, this park was the only park in Springfield that permitted black residents and sports leagues.
John 18:1-2 (NRSV)
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus 18 After Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples.
