Portland Elementary School
Asbury has adopted Portland Elementary School located just a few blocks west of the church. Asbury supports Portand in many different ways, and we are always looking for other ways to help.
Asbury Volunteers have helped out with painting, minor repairs and projects to brighten up the school.
Reading Buddies
Asbury Volunteers work as Reading Buddies to help students that need extra one-on-one help with their reading skills. Besides helping to improve reading skills, the Reading Buddies program also provides an opportunity for children to interact with adults who really care about them and can be a good role model.
Weekend Backpack Food Program
Asbury Volunteers work each week sorting and stuffing 24 backpacks with food in support of the Ozarks Food Harvest “Weekend Backpack Program”. The Weekend Backpack Program™, provides severely at-risk children with a backpack filled with nutritious child-friendly foods for them to take home on the weekends, when they might otherwise go hungry. The program is designed to allow students to get the assistance without drawing any attention to themselves by using backpacks, which look like any other student’s backpack.
Christmas 2010 Christmas Gifts
In December of 2010 – Asbury took on the challenge to provide a Christmas gift of a new board game to every child at Portland Elementary. The idea for the gifts came out of a desire to help strengthen family bonds. Playing games as a family help teach kids how to share, get along, take turns, and is a great opportunity for parents to be a good role model for their children. Local television station KSPR 33 was there to capture the event. Check out the newscast video below.
